How to do it

  1. Step onto the stair climber while the steps are stopped, set your feet in the middle of a step and hold the side rails lightly.

  2. Start the machine at a slow speed and climb one step at a time, placing your whole foot on each step and pushing through your heel until your leg is straight.

  3. Stand tall with a slight forward lean from the hips. Hold the rails only for balance, without leaning on them or taking your weight on your arms.

  4. Keep a steady rhythm for the desired duration, then slow the machine down gradually before you step off.

Form tips

  • Leaning on the rails or the console takes work away from your legs and rounds your back.

  • Land with your whole foot on the step rather than on your toes, so your glutes and quads do the work.

  • Raise the speed gradually, only as far as you can keep climbing without gripping the rails.
