How to do it

  1. Stand facing a wall about an arm's length away, feet hip-width apart. Place your palms flat on the wall at shoulder height, slightly wider than your shoulders, fingers pointing up.

  2. Lean in onto the balls of your feet so your body forms a straight line from your head to your heels, and brace your core.

  3. Bend your elbows, keeping them at about 45 degrees to your body, and bring your chest towards the wall until it is a few centimetres away.

  4. Push through your hands to straighten your arms and return to the starting position. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form tips

  • Keep your body straight from head to heels: do not let your hips sag or stick out.

  • The further your feet are from the wall, the harder the push-up; step closer to make it easier.

  • When you can do 15 controlled repetitions, move on to the push-up with your hands on a box or a bench.
