# Updating the app

Now and then the hi.fitness app on your phone shows a screen asking you to update it, instead of opening as usual. This page explains why, and how to get past it in a minute.

## Why the app asks for an update

The app and hi.fitness servers change together. Sometimes a change means an older version of the app can no longer work correctly: it could save your workouts or meals only partly, or show errors you would not understand. Instead of letting that happen, the app tells you straight away that a newer version is needed.

It does not happen with every release. Most updates reach you quietly in the background. You only see this screen when the version on your phone is too old to keep working.

## You cannot skip it

The screen stays until you install the update. There is no close button, and it comes back if you close and reopen the app.

Your data is safe. Your training, meals, habits and history are stored in your account, not in the old version of the app, and they are all there after the update.

## Update on iPhone

Tap the button on the screen. It opens the right place for you.

To do it yourself:

1. Open the **App Store**.
2. Search for **hi.fitness**.
3. Tap **Update**.

**Testers:** if you got hi.fitness through TestFlight, the update comes from there. Open the **TestFlight** app, pick hi.fitness and tap **Update**.

## Update on Android

Tap the button on the screen. It opens hi.fitness in Google Play.

To do it yourself:

1. Open **Google Play**.
2. Search for **hi.fitness**.
3. Tap **Update**.

## Still seeing the screen?

- Close the app completely and open it again.
- If the store does not offer an update yet, it can take a little while to reach you. Try again later.
- Turn on automatic updates in the App Store or Google Play, and you will rarely see this screen at all.
