# Cable biceps exercises

A cable keeps tension on the biceps for the whole movement. With a barbell or dumbbells the
resistance falls off near the top, because the weight starts acting along your forearm and the
muscle gets a moment of rest. A cable pulls at a constant angle, so that break never arrives.

That makes the cable better for pumping and finishing than for building raw strength - you pick the
load one plate at a time and you change the setup in seconds, but your heaviest curl still happens
on a barbell, not here.

## What does a cable give you that dumbbells do not?

Continuous tension. In a dumbbell curl the weight ends up hanging over your elbow at the top and the
biceps gets a few tenths of a second of relief on every rep. On a cable the line pulls your arm back
down wherever it is in the range, so the muscle never gets that break - hence the pumped feeling
that a cable set is known for.

The second advantage is loading. Plates step up a few kilos at a time and you change them with one
hand, with no putting a pair down and hunting for the next one. For drop sets, or a finisher at the
end of a session, that matters.

## How do you set the station up?

Clip the handle on the lowest hole - the lower it sits, the more vertically the cable runs and the
cleaner the movement is. Stand close enough that the cable is already under tension with your arm
straight, but not so close that the plates clank together at the bottom.

The single-arm version is worth using even if you normally curl with both hands: it lets your wrist
rotate freely and frees the other hand to check whether your elbow is really staying put. A preacher
bench adds the same insurance mechanically - the upper arm lies on the pad and swinging is off the
table.

## Common mistakes

- **Backing away from the stack** - Leaning back turns the curl into a whole-body pull. Stand close enough that the cable runs straight up and down.
- **Elbows drifting after the cable** - Your elbow stays at your ribs. The moment it slides forward, the tension moves onto the front delt.
- **Working half the range** - Constant tension tempts you to leave the arm bent at the bottom. Straighten it - the bottom is where a cable earns its advantage.

## Progress the movement

1. **Write the setup down** - Same plate, same distance from the stack, twice a week. Note which hole the handle was clipped to as well.
2. **Squeeze the range dry** - Reach the top of the rep range on every set. One plate can be a big jump on a cable, so it pays to bank that cushion first.
3. **Add a plate** - Then move up one plate and return to the bottom of the rep range. If the jump is too big, switch to the single-arm version first.
