# Weight plate exercises

A weight plate is rarely equipment in its own right, because usually it is the thing you load onto
a barbell. The list in the atlas is short and there is no sense stretching it: a plate does one
thing well that neither a dumbbell nor a barbell can do.

That thing is the grip, flat palms on either side. Squeezing the plate puts your chest under
tension before your arms move at all, and that is what the Svend press is built on, which accounts
for most of the entries below. The rest simply treat the plate as a convenient weight to hold with
both hands.

## Why squeeze a plate when you could pick up dumbbells?

Because it is a different kind of load. A dumbbell loads the chest with weight pulling down; a plate
squeezed between flat palms loads it with how hard you drive your arms toward each other. The pec's
job is bringing the arm in toward the midline, so squeezing hits that function directly, no matter
what the plate weighs.

The practical consequence is that in the Svend press what counts is not the number on the plate but
whether your hands really press into each other the whole way. A light plate squeezed hard does more
than a heavy one held by the edges.

The three bench angles shift the emphasis up and down the chest exactly the way they do in a regular
press: incline higher, flat through the middle, decline lower. The shift is the same one you get with
a barbell, the load just arrives from a different direction.

## What a plate will not give you

Readable progress. Gym plates come in jumps: 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10 kilograms. Going from two and a half
to five doubles the load, and in a movement that is not about kilograms anyway, a jump like that
measures nothing. That is why you will not find a ready-made progression path on this page. There is
not one.

It also will not replace equipment you already have. The overhead plate press and weighted sit-ups
are versions of movements a dumbbell or a kettlebell does just as well, and often more comfortably.
The plate comes into play when nothing else is free, or when you need something you can hold flat in
front of you with both hands.

So you are left with one use where the plate is genuinely irreplaceable, and a few where it is a
substitute. Worth knowing before you build training around it.

## Common mistakes

- **Pressing with the shoulders** - In the Svend press the chest does the work and the shoulders stay down. Once they ride up toward your ears the squeeze stops mattering, because your arms are holding the plate.
- **Locking the elbows at the top** - Straightening your arms all the way at the top takes tension off the chest and the shoulders, and tension is the only load you have here. On both presses the catalog tells you to stop just short of lockout.
- **Sit-ups done on momentum** - A plate held on straight arms acts as a lever and tempts you to throw it forward. Your abs lift your torso, not the weight in your hands.
